This week, kids studied the friendship between David and Jonathan.

PARENT TIPS:
Jonathan was King Saul’s son, but Jonathan understood that David had been chosen by God to be the next king. David and Jonathan were good friends. King Saul had become jealous of David and had tried to kill him. David was concerned that Saul was trying again to kill him. Jonathan and David created a plan to discover Saul’s intentions. Jonathan learned that his father truly did want to kill David, so he secretly conveyed the danger to David. David and Jonathan promised to always care for one another and for each other’s family before David left to find safety from King Saul. Talk about how to be a godly friend with your family. Then discuss the questions below:

 1. How did Jonathan show that he was a good friend to David?
Hint/Answer: He protected David, warned him about danger, and cared about what was best for him.

2. What did David and Jonathan do when they found out King Saul wanted to hurt David?
Hint/Answer: They followed their plan—Jonathan secretly told David the truth so David could stay safe.

3. What promise did David and Jonathan make to each other?
Hint/Answer: They promised to always care for and show kindness to one another and each other’s families.

4. How can we be good and godly friends to others—like Jonathan and David?
Hint/Answer: By being honest, kind, loyal, helpful, and doing what is right even when it’s hard.

5. When someone we care about is having a hard time, what can we do to help them?
Hint/Answer: We can listen, pray for them, stay with them, encourage them, or help keep them safe.
